Northampton chairman David Cardoza has confirmed he will give some of the money received from the club's cup runs this season to manager Ian Sampson to spend on new players. The Cobblers have generated healthy revenue from money-spinning Carling Cup ties with Liverpool and Ipswich and have been drawn against Sheffield Wednesday in the second-round of the FA Cup which should mean another boost to the finances.
Although a percentage of the funds will be used to pay off a number of bills Cardoza said that some will be available for Sampson to bolster his squad and he is already looking at a number of targets although interest in in-demand Crewe striker Calvin Zola has lessened. He told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo: "Some of that money will be made available for Sammo for new players. "The money is definitely there to expand the budget. That's the point of these cup runs, they've given us more money to spend on players.
We're not going to spend money we haven't got but at the moment we do have a bit of money from the cup run." He added: "The situation with him (Zola) has gone a bit quiet and we're looking at one or two other targets. We're actively looking. I don't know if we'll spend money on a player in terms of a transfer fee, the player we're looking at would cost quite a bit of money in wages."
