Former Northampton Town defender Ben Collins, who played in the Cobblers' celebrated FA Cup third round win over Arsenal in 1958, has died, aged 81.Collins, who was with Northampton for 13 seasons, made 222 league and cup appearances during that time.

He was used at centre-half or full- back and also captained the Cobblers.

After retiring, he opened a sports shop in the town with then player-manager Dave Bowen before going on to run the shop on his own for over 40 years.

Collins earned a testimonial from the club in 1953, at which he persuaded the legendary Stanley Matthews to play.

The England winger agreed to do so, for a £100 fee, only to then suffer an injury.

But Matthews agreed to be a linesman, making him the most high-profile figure ever to run the line at the County Ground.

Collins, who was just a week short of his 82nd birthday when he passed away, also played cricket at a high level locally, and was involved in tours abroad.
