Boss Neil Woods was keen for the Ivory Coast forward to stay and spearhead a promotion charge from the Blue Square Premier but Akpa Akpro has opted to make the most of his free agent status.

Woods told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph: "We've made a very good offer to Jean-Louis but he has spoken very honestly about his desire to go up a league rather than down a division."

The 25-year-old does not have a prolific record during his time in English football but ended the 2009/10 campaign in good form as the Mariners made a late, doomed, bid to preserve their football league status.

With Northampton in the market for a new frontman to replace the talismanic Bayo Akinfenwa, Akpa Akpro could be a potential target for manager Ian Sampson.
