Post match reaction to defeat by Crewe

"I thought the players worked very hard for the win and showed real spirit. I didn't think we passed the ball as well we can but we defended well enough and Luke Varney took his two goals very well. I'm a lot more confident when he goes through in those one-on-one situations. I think he got in three times and scored twice. That is a good enough ratio and you have to credit their defender for the interception to stop him inside the six-yard box. Ryan did well for both goals too. He played his part.

"The pitch was a bit lively. The ball was bouncing around a bit. It was one of those matches when you needed someone in the middle of the park, who can get the ball down and play. It was a day for someone like Tony Grant. Saying that I thought our midfielders did a good job and stayed with their runners. Gary (Roberts) had to do a specific job on their substitute. Northampton were physical. They were not dirty, just physical and we had to match them. I thought that if we could do that then our quality players could emerge and win us the game. I was confident that would happen in the end.

"Billy suffered a hamstring injury, so we got him off as quickly as we could. Danny came on and did well. He was fine in there and coped very well. I think he defended our box well and I lost count how many times we headed it clear. They all showed that resilience that has seen us win here and at Carlisle in recent weeks. We have a week without a mid-week game, so I will give the players Tuesday off. It is a still a bit early to know how long Billy will be out."

"It was a bit of a smash and grab by them. They only had a few attempts at goal but made them count where as we had plenty of efforts at their goal but we did not work their goalkeeper enough. Luke Varney is a quality player and he punished us. We were sloppy a couple of times and he made us pay.

We dominated possession but the way we conceded goals was disappointing. The two lads who came in - Mark Hughes and Kenny Deuchar - both did well. It will take them both a while to get used to the tempo of football at this level but they both showed enough to make me think they will both be very good players for us.
