Sampson takes plusses

Northampton manager Ian Sampson remained upbeat despite the 2-1 home defeat to Chesterfield. The Cobblers took the lead when Kevin Thornton headed in his fourth goal of the season. But Dean Morgan capitalised on some poor defending to draw the Spirites level and Craig Davies snatched the points four minutes later when he coolly beat Chris Dunn from the edge of the area.

"If we keep playing to that standard we'll win more games than we'll lose and I've told the players that," said Sampson. "We've got to keep spirits up and produce more performances like that one.

"We were a bit naive at times in the second half and could have shut the game out. But we wanted the second goal and I don't want to play with 10 men behind the ball. I will watch the video of  the game again and I'II still be wondering how we haven't won it."
