The Countdown - Part 2

Last updated : 07 April 2002 By

The latest results have now relegated Wrexham and short of a minor miracle Bournemouth will suffer the same fate. Bury still cling on to the small hope that Notts County will slip up in the last 2 games and for the Cobblers safety looks certain with the exception of a complete disaster. If results continue to go the right way, arch rivals Peterborough United will finish in a lower position with the Posh having to face yet another promotion chasing side next week when they travel to Reading. The final game of the season sees them take on Bury, also a tough game if it is to decide the outcome of their season.

With all the results apart from Notts County going right for the Cobblers, a finish as far up the table as 15th might now be possible.

Remaining fixtures:

Wigan Athletic (A) – 13th April

A week before Cobblers have to travel to the JJB to face Wigan, the Lancashire side did us a big favour. The bottom of the league although remains the same regarding position, with Chesterfield losing against Wigan means Northampton are now just 1 point away from them. The result also ensures that some of the pressure is off and the Cobblers don't necessarily need to win.

Cambridge United (H) – 20th April

After a great result last week, Cambridge slipped to a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Wrexham. The result sends Cambridge to the 3rd division as the rock bottom side but for the Welsh opponents a great win still wasn't enough and are also relegated after Notts County won against Blackpool.
