Northampton 1 Brentford 0

Last updated : 24 January 2002 By Mark Kennedy
Keith Welch and Duncan Spedding returned to the Cobblers side for the visit of Brentford, who had lost their last three league games. It was Town who were quickest out of the starting blocks, keen to continue the success of the Ashton Gate victory three days earlier. Six minutes into the game, Jamie Forrester pounced on a misguided header from Darren Powell. The Cobblers striker was brought down by Michael Dobson, but the penalty appeals were waved away by referee Phil Joslin.

On 12 minutes, Paul McGregor lofted the ball over the Bees defence to Forrester, who rolled the ball into the path of Sam Parkin. Parkin managed to squeeze in before defender Ingimarssan, but keeper Olafur Gottskalksson just managed to palm the ball away. Town were clearly inspiried by this lively start and continued to press, Gottkalksson then dropped a James Hunt corner but managed to recover before the ball crossed the line.

In the 26th minute Roy Hunter began a quality move, playing the ball out of defence to Chris Hargreaves, who combined well with Hunt. The Cobblers midfielder then picked out Forrester, who played a delightful crossfield ball to McGregor, but the Brentford keeper just nipped in to take the ball away from the Cobblers man.

On 31 minutes the visitors registered their only effort on goal, Micheal Dobson struck a 25 yard free kick straight at Keith Welch. Eight minutes later Gabbiadini and Anderson clashed as the ball was rolling out for a Brentford goal kick, as referee Mr Joslin raced over to step in between the player, he collided with the Cobblers man and went crashing to the turf, much to the delight of the crowd.

In first half stoppage time, Brentford's Hunt raced clear of the Cobblers defence, despite looking suspiciously offside, he whipped in a cross-shot which skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Unlucky red card - Marco Gabbiadini

The second half began again with The Cobblers in control and nine minutes in, Chris Hargreaves was denied a shooting opportunity by a brilliant last ditch tackle by Powell following a great ball from Forrester. In the 65th minute Ben Burgess beat Daryl Burgess, but his shot sailed well over Keith Welch's crossbar.

As the half continues though, Town were continually frustrated by poor refereeing decisions from Mr Joslin, he booked Powell and Gabbiadini for another clash. The Cobblers forward appeared to be the innocent party as Powell appeared to stamp on him following a challange. Every attack from the visitors was halted by an offside flag and every Town attack was thwarted by a soft free kick decision.

With eight minutes left on the clock, Town's players and fans patience pretty much ran out, Gabbiadini chased onto a through ball, appeared to be tripped by a Bees defender. Mr Joslin immediately blew his whistle and the homes fans celebrated what they thought was going to be a penalty, but the instead the Town forward received his marching orders for what was deemed to be a dive.
Derek Asamoah - 2nd senior goal
Brilliant Goal - Derek Asamoah

Kevan Broadhurst immediately took off the hard working Jamie Forrester for Richard Hope, in the bid to secure a late point. But substitute Derek Asamoah changed everything three minutes later with a moment of sheer brilliance. The lively forward raced onto Sam Parkin's thorugh ball, he spotted Gottkalksson off his line and sweetly lobbed the ball over the Brentford keeper, on the volley from 25 yards. The home fans went wild, it was a morale victory against the odds.

The forth official indicated four minutes of stoppage time, in which substitute Lloyd Owusu had the ball in the net, but he was denied by the lineman's early flag. The Cobblers held on the record their 2nd win in three days, leaving them only three points from safety.

Editor's View
Another great performance from Town who thoroughly deserved three points. Asamoah's goal was amazing, great vision from the young striker. Marco Gabbiadini was very unlucky with the sending off, the first booking was very harsh and the second was difficult to see from my seat in the West Stand, but it did look like there was contact. It's a shame because it would have been a perfect night for Town.

Cobblers Man of the Match - Daryl Burgess solid at the back and resticted every Brentford attack.

Ref Watch - Mr P Joslin was awful. Completely inconsistant throughout the first half, missing the obvious every time. Had it in for the Cobblers in the second half, with petty free kicks and wrong descision after wrong decision. I'd lose my job if I performed that badly!!
