This was billed as the battle of the new bosses - but it was Kidderminster's Jan Molby who left Sixfields with a smile on his face after the 1-0 win over Northampton Town.

This was Molby's first game back in charge of Harriers after the sacking of Ian Britton and it was a goal by ex-Northampton man Sean Parrish in the 23rd minute which settled a poor contest.

Harriers were notching only their second win in 14 games. New Northampton boss Colin Calderwood has seen his charges secure only two draws from three matches and winning habits are a distant memory for his lacklustre side.

It wasn't until injury time that the Cobblers registered any sort of shot on target, with Stuart Brock finally forced to make a save from substitute Richard Walker's half-volley.

Walker, only signed today on loan from Blackpool for a month, had come on as a half time replacement for Mark Richards.

Northampton's only other effort of note saw Walker deflect a cross by Josh Low against the outside of the post.

Harriers were hardly inspired, but they at least carved out a handful of chances, beginning in the sixth minute when John Williams shot on the turn was saved by Glyn Thompson.

They went ahead when John Melligan slipped a pass into the path of Parrish and the midfielder directed a low left foot shot past Thompson.

They could have been further ahead by the break when Graham Ward's cross to the back post was controlled by Williams but his shot was blocked by Thompson's body.

Two second half drives in a minute by Dean Bennett again threatened to extend Harriers advantage although, ultimately, one was enough and left Molby a satisfied man.

He said: "I felt the longer the game went on we became more edgy. The players are not used to winning but they did everything we asked of them tonight." He added: "We showed we could mix it with a good performance in the first half and real determination in the second half when we did the things necessary to win a football match."
