Northampton Town secured their first league double of the season and moved up three places to 13th while Yeovil Town continued their recent depressing run.

Chris Hargreaves' third goal of the season, but his first in the league, and top scorer Martin Smith's tenth of the campaign provided the spice as the Cobblers recorded their third straight home win in the league.

The Glovers could have gone ahead in bizarre fashion in only the fifth minute when goalkeeper Lee Harper completely miscued a Chris Willmott backpass and watched in horror as the ball spun across the goal but just skimmed the far post.

The visitors provided plenty of neat approach work, but lacked the killer touch in the final third, a point picked up on by manager Gary Johnson when he said: "They were the home side but we had enough chances. We didn't finish off some of our quality moves." He added: "A couple of bits of indecision in both penalty areas cost us the game." His opposite number, Colin Calderwood, hopes the home run will continue on the next two Saturdays when Bristol Rovers and Rochdale are the visitors. He said: "We need to keep this going at home if we are to have any chance of progressing up the league.

"We had to persevere, especially in the first half in the poor conditions. After half-time, without being fluent for long periods we had lots of shots and crosses and made our own luck.

"They broke well against us and were a very good test. They cause teams lots of different problems." Yeovil will be kicking themselves for their failings in front of goal. Three minutes before Hargreaves put the home side ahead with a precise shot from the edge of the box, they had a glorious chance to open things up when Kevin Gall's 30-yard run ended with a pass to Lee Johnson, who appeared to have the goal at his mercy, only to hit the sidenetting.

Smith's goal owed much to a pinpoint pass from Paul Trollope which left him clear of the visiting defence, allowing him to slip the ball over the onrushing Chris Weale.
