Cobblers repel Shrews

Northampton survived a second half onslaught to pick up a vital point from a 1-1 draw at promotion contenders Shrewsbury.

Goalkeeper Shane Higgs shone for the Cobblers with a string of fine saves in the second half, which included instinctive stops from Marvin Morgan and Terry Gornell.

Northampton took the lead in the 22nd minute, with on-loan West Brom striker Saido Berahino tapping in from six yards after lively debutant Akwasi Asante rounded goalkeeper Chris Neal and sent the ball goalwards.

Shrewsbury hit back to equalise 12 minutes later when Matt Richards fired a fine shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner.

Chances continued to come and go at either end during a breathless first half, with Shrewsbury's Gornell flashing a header just wide, while at the other end Neal did well to block from Lewis Young who had just the keeper to beat.

Shrewsbury, who remain unbeaten at home, grew increasingly dominant in the second half but the winner they craved against a Northampton side they beat 7-2 at Sixfields in November failed to arrive.
