Wigan regained the leadership of the second division with a hard fought victory over a stubborn Northampton side at the JJB stadium.

Manager Paul Jewell will no doubt be critical of his teamÂ’s performance - despite him expected to pick up the manager of the month award - as he will be looking for more goals in the weeks to come.

The decisive strike came after 37 minutes when Welsh international Neil Roberts pounced from close range, under the watchful eye of his international manager Mark Hughes.

Wigan never looked in danger from a Northampton outfit that failed to register a single effort on goal and were content to soak up Wigan's pressure and rely on the break.

Scott Green had a golden opportunity to double WiganÂ’s lead just before the break when he some how headed over from Steve McMillan's cross, but in a dour second half Wigan failed to turn their superiority into chances let alone goals.

And the visitorsÂ’ cause was hardly helped after 73 minutes when veteran striker Marco Gabbiadini was sent off for a second booking.
