The Cobblers have signed 18-year-old midfielder Nathaniel Wedderburn, and agreed new deals with a host of their young players, including Liam Davis.

Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton: "These younger players will have hunger and help us get out of this league.

"With the budget that's been set, we need to look at different types of players - players with potential."

He added: "Our expectations are the same as the fans. We want to get promoted, either straight up or through the play-offs.

"We will do it in a different way and not rely on having lots of players and experience."

Midfielder Abdul Osman, 23, is still considering a new contract offer from the club.

"Contrary to reports, it's not been agreed yet," said Sampson.

"He's quite happy with it, at the moment it isn't 100 percent agreed but it looks like he will sign."
